- Negative marking — ¼ mark deducted for every wrong answer.
- Medium — English. That suitable for candidates holding a Bachelor's degree.
- Shortlist cut-off — 40% in the Objective Test is the minimum to reach the shortlist.
- The descriptive trap — Only the descriptive papers of candidates who reach the interview shortlist are evaluated. There is no separate cut-off for the Descriptive Test.

Who can apply
Qualification
Bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks, OR a Master's Degree, OR a Law Degree, awarded or recognised by any of the Universities in Kerala.
- A Bachelor’s degree below 50% is not eligible. Rounding to the nearest whole number is not allowed — 49.5% does not become 50%.
- Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates are exempt from the 50% requirement.
- Where a CGPA, OGPA or letter grade was awarded, the equivalent percentage must be entered, and a certificate to that effect from the university is required at verification.
- All qualifications must be held on or before the closing date for applications.
Age
18 to 36 years, age is reckoned on 1 january of the notification year.

- Ex-servicemen, ex-General Reserve Engineer Force and disembodied Territorial Army personnel may exclude their service, plus up to five years of unemployment after discharge, provided they have not reached 50.
- Blindness and low vision, and deaf and hard of hearing: 15 years. Other disabilities: 10 years. In no case may the upper age exceed 50.
- Widows: 5 years, and in no case may the upper age exceed 50.

One application form covers both recruitment numbers, and the selection process is common to both. A differently abled candidate should select both numbers on the single form — applying twice loses common candidature. Separate ranked lists are prepared for each.
